To answer the Rated 5.00 out of 5 Afterward question, as I said before, it depends upon your desire. If I want an independent dog that I can be most confident in coming to protect me with violence, it’s the Akita. If I want a trainable dog that can do the job and yet have very little downside, it’s the GSD. I have 2 year old female japanese akita and she is one of the most beautiful, cute and friendly dogs you could ever meet. I trained her from a really young age and socialised her with people and other dogs. I also discouraged barking while she was young which then resulted to her not barking at all unless it’s warranted. For the most part of her 2 years, i was under the impression that i trained her to be so friendly that she’s now lost her guard dog instincts. I couldn’t be more wrong. One afternoon, while i was having a nap in my room, i woke up to a familiar barking on my front lawn but ignored it cuz i was certain that miaka (my dog) was inside and couldn’t have gotten out until i heard a panicked voice yelling “the dog got out! The dog got out!” So i put on some clothes and ran outside. Sure enough, i saw miaka on the lawn in front of a panicked 16yo kid growling and barking at him. I have absolutely no doubt that the kid would’ve tried to get into the house which then caused the dog to get out and chase him. Miaka never barks or growls at anyone or show any sort of hostility so it made me wonder what the kid actually did to warrant such hostility from her. That then put my mind at ease knowing that she would protect me and the house when the need arises.
